What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a logical, effective and practical system which emphasizes and utilizes the efficiency of body mechanics. It eliminates the reliance of body size and strength. Wing Chun is often classified as a “soft style” because it requires minimal effort and physical force to defeat bigger and stronger opponents. Therefore, it is suitable for everyone regardless of gender and physique. Historically, Wing Chun was developed approximately 300 years ago by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui. She was originally a Shaolin kung fu master. She used her skills and knowledge to develop a method to improve on the weaknesses in the Shaolin system. This new system became well known as Wing Chun, after Ng Mui’s first and female student, Yim Wing Chun. Yip Man, the grandmaster of modern Wing Chun brought the system from China to Hong Kong in 1949. This system has received a worldwide attention by one of his students - a movie star and Kung Fu legend, Bruce Lee. |
